Abstract
The primary aim of this study was to examine the moderating role of trauma type in the efficacy of positive psychology intervention(PPI) for trauma-exposed university students. Their trauma was distinguished between interpersonal and impersonal traumas. A secondary aim was to explore the role of duration since trauma exposure, simple/complex trauma, severity of post-traumatic stress symptoms at pre-intervention, and severity of depressive symptoms at pre-intervention as moderators in the intervention effects. The PPI and non-treatment control conditions consisted of 51 and 49 participants, respectively. The results showed that the PPI was more effective in reducing post-traumatic stress symptoms among participants with impersonal trauma(n=23) than those with interpersonal trauma(n=28). In contrast, the PPI was more effective in reducing post-traumatic cognitions and increasing meaning in life among participants with interpersonal trauma than those with impersonal trauma. In addition, the PPI was more effective in decreasing depressive symptoms and post-traumatic cognitions among participants with longer duration since trauma exposure than those with shorter duration. Also, the PPI was more effective in decreasing depressive symptoms and post-traumatic cognitions, as well as increasing meaning in life among participants with complex trauma than those with simple trauma. Both the severity of post-traumatic stress symptoms and depressive symptoms at pre-intervention negatively contributed to the prediction of post-traumatic growth at post-intervention, without regard to the intervention condition. In conclusion, the results suggest the necessity of applying PPI alone or along with other psychotherapeutic interventions based on the type of trauma, duration since trauma exposure, and simple/complex trauma.
